What a policy contains
- Accrual method — how the balance grows. See Accrual methods explained.
- Accrual start — whether accrual counts from the employee's hire date, the date the policy was assigned, or the calendar year.
- Carryover — what happens to unused days at year end. See Carryover rules.
- Waiting period — a number of days after someone starts before they can take leave under this policy. Set it to 0 for no waiting period.
Who it applies to
Every policy targets one of four scopes:
| Scope | Use it for |
|---|---|
| Organization | Your default policy — everyone, unless something more specific overrides it. |
| Location | Statutory minimums that differ by country or state. |
| Department | Teams with genuinely different entitlements, like shift-based staff. |
| Employee | One-off arrangements — a negotiated extra week, a phased return. |
