Side-by-side comparison
Cabana vs. Calamari
Leave management and attendance tracking bundled together. See why Slack-first teams choose Cabana instead.
Common pain points
Why teams look for a Calamari alternative
- Bundles time-off with attendance clock-in/clock-out — more than most teams need
- More configuration to get started; steeper learning curve than a focused PTO tool
- Slack integration exists but is not the primary workflow surface
- Pricing adds up when you pay for attendance features you don't use

Is Cabana right for you?
Switch from Calamari if…
Calamari is a capable tool — but it's designed for teams that need both leave management and time-clock attendance in one place. If you just need PTO, you're paying for and configuring features your team will never touch. Cabana is focused on one thing: making time-off requests, approvals, and balances effortless inside Slack.
- You only need PTO tracking — not time-clock or attendance management
- Setup felt overwhelming and you never finished configuring it
- Your team is Slack-first and wants to request PTO without leaving the chat

“We were paying way too much for software nobody used. Cabana was running in Slack within minutes. The whole team adopted it instantly.”
Sarah L.
Head of Ops, 32-person startup
“The Slack integration is the real difference. Approving a PTO request used to mean logging into a portal. Now I just tap Approve in a DM.”
Marcus R.
Founder, 18-person agency
“Balance tracking used to be a monthly reconciliation nightmare. Cabana just… handles it. I haven't touched the spreadsheet in months.”
Priya T.

Honest limitations
What Cabana doesn't do (yet)
We'd rather you pick the right tool than churn in month two. If any of these are dealbreakers, Calamari might still be the right fit.
If you need time-clock or attendance tracking, stay on Calamari
Calamari's attendance module handles clock-in/clock-out, overtime, and shift management. Cabana doesn't do any of that. If hourly tracking is part of your workflow, Calamari (or AttendanceBot) is a better fit.
Cabana is leave-only — no HR records module
Calamari includes some basic HR record keeping. Cabana is purely focused on leave management. Your source of truth for employee records stays in your HRIS.
Frequently asked questions
We use Calamari for both attendance and leave — can Cabana replace it?
Only the leave part. If you rely on Calamari's clock-in/clock-out or shift scheduling, you'd still need a separate tool for that. If leave management is the main thing your team uses, Cabana replaces it cleanly with a much simpler Slack experience.
Is Cabana easier to set up than Calamari?
Yes. Calamari has more configuration because it covers more ground. Cabana is focused on leave, so setup takes about 5 minutes: import your team, pick a policy template, connect Slack.
